Updated, again! (9/27/2012) Librarians Live-Tweeting During a Movie (aka Fun with Social Media!)

(9/27/2012)

Oh, it is ON!  Commence viewing of the 1980 version of “Flash Gordon” on Sunday, September 30th at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.  For our Tweeters in the UK, this is 20:00 or 8 PM.  If you are in another time zone, figure out what time to start your movie here – http://time.is/compare.  Make sure to use hashtag #libfg so that we can follow each other.  Let the librarian snark fly!

Hear ye, hear ye – we have an update!  Flash Gordon will be our movie for this inaugural edition of “Librarians Live-Tweeting During a Movie.”  Sunday, September 30th at a time still to be determined.  Does 3 PM Eastern work?  Comment to this blog post or suggest a time @LibrarySherpa.  Let’s use #libfg (Librarians Flash Gordon) so our Tweets can be easily followed.  N.B. Apparently, #ltm is already in use.

A 24-hr streaming video rental is available through Amazon.

Original post:

One of the great things about being a member of the Special Libraries Association is that you meet and network with colleagues from all over the globe.  The downside is, other than once a year at the annual conference, you don’t get to see them.  (…and that’s only if you all all fortunate enough to travel to conference every year!)  Unless you are independently wealthy (and who isn’t these days, really?) and can spend your time galavanting about the world seeing your librarian friends, how do you maintain some sort of level of interaction?

OHAI, SOCIAL MEDIA!

So, I had an idea.  Something you may do with friends that you can hang out with in person is to watch a movie together.  You know, maybe a cheesy movie where you all make snarky comments, in the vein of Mystery Science Theater 3000.  I thought it might be fun to gather up the SLA Tweeps to watch the same movie at the same time and live Tweet about it.

Suggested Guidelines:

1. One movie will be agreed upon ahead of time.  Participants should have the movie available to them to play on demand, e.g. DVD, DVR, etc.

2. There will be a mutually agreed upon time for the movie to start.  Participants will try to sync their play time as close to the group as humanly possible.  I’m thinking a Saturday or Sunday at 3 PM Eastern might be a good time.  That would be 8 PM in England, 9 PM on Continental Europe, 12 Noon Pacific…you get the picture.

3. Participants shall use an agreed-upon Twitter hashtag.  Something short, to allow for longer text.  Maybe something like #ltm (Librarians Tweeting Movies?)

Let’s choose a movie!  We’ll start with a poll.  Feel free to add your own favorites.  I’m sensing a desire to watch cheesy 80s sci-fi.  But, anything is on the table.

Consider the ball rolling.  Cast your vote and we’ll firm up some plans.  Let’s have fun – Librarians Tweeting Movies!

Many thanks to Laura and Simon for the inspiration to make this happen!
